Discussion in "Playing Shakespeare" class at the University at Albany has brought about a revolutionary idea for a new take on the timeless Willy Shakes' play ROMEO AND JULIET. Set in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, this fast-paced update follows the brief but lusty love affair between a goaltender (Romeo character) on one of Saskatoon's two powerful Junior teams, and the daughter of the head coach (Juliet character) of Romeo's archrival team. Even with the help of a team trainer (Friar Laurence character) and snackbar attendant (Nurse character), this union can never occur due to the intensity of this heated rivalry in this small town where hockey is life. Taking their anger to the ice, starting defensemen and capital (Mercutio character) is killed by blocking a slapshot that accidentally strikes him in the face, off the stick of the star center from the opposing team (Tybalt character). The goaltender loses his cool and twohands the center as he leans on the boards, earning him a game disqualification, suspension and jail time for the murder. Despite the best efforts of the referee (Prince character), violence escalates and the town erupts. The head coach's daughter, still pining for her goaltender, does her best to stave off her father's attempts for her to marry his assistant coach (Paris character), but time is running out.
